St Mary’s Year 10 Golf Team took part in the Sainbury’s School Games Golf Xtme competition at Benfield school on Wednesday. St Mary’s team included Max Ferriday, Sam Ashcroft, Sam McDonald, Joby Tennant, Joe Stonor and Euan James. The boys were excellent in the competition, with one of the main highlights being Max Ferriday – who played a brilliant hole to make a 2, the lowest score recorded by any student on the day! St Mary’s played some fantastic golf and won the competition by a strong margin. The students attitude and effort was outstanding during the competition, showing the correct etiquette and behaviour on the course at all times. I look forward to taking them through to the County Finals which will be played in early July.

St Mary’s Year 8&9 boys rugby teams took part in the RFU ‘Day of Rugby’ in Manchester today. 25 students represented the school in a series of 7’s fixtures against a variety of different schools from across the North of England. The Year 8 team had a brilliant day, winning 4 and drawing 1 from their 5 games, scoring 14 tries while only conceding 5. The rucking and tackling was excellent, but the ball carrying and support play when attacking was the highlight of the day. Damon Baghi, Alex Warton and Ben Jubb all carried the ball well to score several tries each.
Nineteen Year 8 and 9 students took part in the ECB Cricket Activators course today. The course is the first step on the ladder towards becoming qualified ECB coaches, and develops leadership and organisational skills with a view to students leading and supporting upcoming festivals and house competitions. Dan Humble from the Northumbria Cricket Board visited school to run the course, where the students were given the task of leading and organising a series of different small sided games and officiating those games. The group worked hard throughout the day and were enthusiastic leaders of their own games. Each of the Activators must now arrange to do 10 hours of volunteer work to complete their qualification, and they will be supporting members of the PE department in cricket clubs and house competitions to accomplish this over the upcoming months.
