Reading has a high profile across all subjects at St Mary’s.

Each department has a disciplinary literacy policy in which teachers have considered what the particular literacy challenges are in their subject areas and how to address these.  Key vocabulary is specified in each curriculum plan, and staff are familiar with a range of reading strategies to employ in their teaching and unpicking of texts.  Each department has a reading curriculum and has considered ways to develop a love of reading in their subject.

SEND students are included in all reading initiatives. Pupil passports produced by the SENCO give advice about how to approach texts with students with SEND and these are referred to regularly by staff.  SEND is a specified agenda item in Department Meetings and in these meetings teachers discuss and share good practice what subject specific adjustments need to be made with individual SEND students including when reading with them in class.
