Year 8 students took part in their Inter-House Cricket Competition on Thursday in the final day of a 3 day house tournament. Each house again split into 2 teams with A teams playing Softball Cricket and B teams playing Diamond Cricket.
The standard of play was set very high from the first game with both the Alnwick vs Lindisfarne game and the Warkworth vs Bamburgh game both ending in ties, leading to 2 ‘Super Over’ competitions of 3 balls. Both games came down to the final ball of the ‘Super Over’, with Lindisfarne and Warkworth both managing to hit the 4 runs required to win the game.
The final of the Softball competition was played between Lindisfarne and Warkworth once more. Lindisfarne batted first and made a formidable 90 thanks to some big hitting from Muizz Shiekh and Joe Joblin who both retired on 20+. Grace Taylor hit 2 massive sixes in reply for Warkworth, but when she was caught on the boundary by Alan Zhang for 18 Warkworth struggled to keep up with the high scoring rate needed and eventually fell 15 runs short.
With Lindisfarne A winning the Full Softball Competition the results came down to the B teams and their results playing Diamond Cricket. Warkworth B played some excellent cricket throughout and were dominant winners, and with Lindisfarne B only managing to finish 3rd in the Diamond Cricket competition Warkworth became the overall champions of the day.
Special mention should go to the 11 Year 9 and 8 students who officiated the games as part of their Cricket Activators qualification – Asif Khan, Shazhib Saleem, Tobin Togy, Tomas Prado, Thomas Gray, Sam Jankowski, Dan Meyer, Lucy Hobbs, Gianna Foster, Ghulam Mustafa and Luke Ashcroft – they did an excellent job throughout the day.
Top performances/moments of the day.
Will Campbell – Will took one of the catches of the day with a full length dive before safely catching the ball in 2 hands. In addition to that Will also top scored for Bamburgh with over 50 runs on the day!
Owen Armstrong – Owen hit the ball exceptionally well all day and finished up with over 50 runs, including 2 massive 6’s which flew high over the boundary.
Daniel Hawkins – with Alnwick needing 2 runs to win with 2 balls remaining the ball was hit hard into the leg side and looked to be going for a certain 4 to win the game. Daniel had other ideas, throwing himself to his left to take a wonderful diving catch!
Jack Pilling – as captain of Alnwick Jack led his side to 2 ‘Super Over’s’ thanks in large part to his excellent batting (top scorer with 62 runs), bowling (3 wickets) and fielding throughout the day. In the 3rd place play off he also made 2 run outs from direct hits from long range, taking aim and firing the stumps down with excellent power and precision.
