The PE department at St Mary’s strive to encourage all students to take part in some physical activity and aim to inspire students to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Along with celebrating great sporting achievements, we celebrate the effort and commitment of students who sometimes find sport and exercise challenging.
On 4th May twenty three students were selected to take part in a Sky Sports Living for Sport event with the former Olympic gymnast, Craig Heap. The girls listened to Craig’s inspirational story of how he overcame barriers to become successful. Through games and practical activities Craig delivered a confidence building workshop, a reward for these girls who work hard in PE lessons.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the morning and I believe they gained a lot out of meeting this athlete and are encouraged to become the very best people they can be.
Keep up the excellent work, girls.
Miss Hillon.
35 students made the long journey to Treginnis Farm, near St David’s in Wales. They have spent a fabulous week working with a variety of animals such as sheep, goats and pigs as well as feeding the chickens and turkeys. Students have explored the surrounding country side and taken a boat ride to the nearby Ramsey Island. All in all it has been a fantastic week thoroughly enjoyed by both students and staff.

St Mary’s Y7 & Y8 team took part in the emerging schools festival at Wallsend RFC today.
The Year 7 team played Churchill in a 15-a-side fixture over 2 30 minute halves, easily the longest and biggest game which many of the students had ever taken part in. The team quickly got used to the extra space and extra players and started to play some very good attacking rugby. Sam McDonald had the moment of the match, when he stole a loose ball at the halfway line. Quickly seeing he had a chance to make good ground he darted down the wing, beating several players thanks to a fantastic turn of pace, before narrowly outrunning the covering defenders to score a sensational solo try in the corner. St Mary’s defended well throughout the game, and managed to run in several more tries, eventually finishing comfortable winners 5-2.
St Mary’s Y7&8 Swimming team took part in the Tyne and Wear School Games Swimming Gala on Wednesday. The teams performed brilliantly and were a pleasure to take on the day. The encouragement and support shown by the students was excellent and contributed to the excellent results from both teams. The girls finished 3rd in the final of both the 4x50m Freestyle relay and the 4x50m Medley. The boys then matched their results, finishing 3rd in the 4x50m Freestyle relay and the 4x50m Medley finals. The girls team included Thea Cowie, Leah Martin, Lily Hall, Megan Darwood and Holly Tibs. The boys team included Archie McConnell, Jack Orr, Toby Caisley and Phillip Davidson. All students will receive their medals in their next assembly. A fantastic performance from all involved.
