St Mary’s Year 8 and 10 boys tennis teams took part in a Newcastle league fixture against Kings Priory tonight. The Year 10 team included Matthew Mernin, Rory Restall, Aidan Byrne and Patrick Caragay.
Matthew put in a fantastic performance to win his singles game 6-3, with some powerful serving and vicious groundstrokes being too much for his opponent. The remainder of the team struggled against an experienced Kings side, but Rory Restall managed to get on the scoreboard thanks to some excellent defensive work and a never-give up attitude. In the doubles Matthew and Rory played a hard fought set but unfortunately couldn’t close out their opportunities, losing 6-3. Aiden and Patrick gave a good effort in their doubles game but were ultimately well beaten 6 games to love. Thanks to both lads for filling in at short notice to ensure that the fixture could still go ahead.
The Year 8 team included Yashwin Krishnaraj, Matthew O’Brien Joseph Hunsley and Lucas Colley. Matthew and Yashwin played very competitively in their singles matches but came up just short 5-7 and 4-6 respectively before losing 3-6 in their doubles match. Lucas and Joseph also battled hard in their singles and doubles but Kings were again too strong giving them the clean sweep, a slightly misleading scoreline given the close nature of each of the sets played.
A great effort from all of the boys who played, showing again how much they enjoy their tennis.
