The Year 8 Boys Cricket Team played today in the Northumbria Cricket Board Tournament at the Westgate Centre for Sport.
St Mary’s played Walbottle in game one and got a good start thanks to Will Campbell and Jack Pilling. Wickets fell regularly but St Mary’s managed to make it to a good score of 118 thanks to a great partnership between Muizz Sheikh and John Carr.
John Carr, Mohammed Din and Jack Pilling were the pick of the bowlers, but St Mary’s were unable to take enough wickets to restrict Walbottle enough, eventually losing by 20 runs. St Mary’s outscored Walbottle in runs scored, but lost 10 more wickets which cost them the game.
In game two St Mary’s played Excelsior. Jack Pilling started things off well with 2 wickets, one thanks to a fantastic one handed catch by Alex Histed. St Mary’s bowled much better the second time round, and managed to restrict Excelsior to 132.
In reply Alex Histed and Muizz Sheikh got the innings off to a great start with some big hits and fast running. Wickets tumbled regularly however, leaving the final pair of John Carr and Jack Pilling needing 25 runs to win. It came down to 7 needed from the last over, and some well-placed shots saw St Mary’s win by 6 runs.
The boys really worked hard on improving their running and communication, and played with great sportsmanship all day.
The team: Jack Pilling, John Carr, Will Campbell, Muizz Sheikh, Jonjo Block, Alex Histed, Hashim Ali, Damon Baghi, Luke Ashcroft, Mohammed Din.
