The year 7 & 8 girls’ team played in the RFU Festival at Druids Park. The girls played 4 games against Churchill A, Gosforth A, Churchill B and Gosforth B – finishing with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss against the eventual winners, Churchill A.

The team played brilliantly, and quickly improved their passing and defending against vastly more experienced club players. Grace Taylor was a fantastic organiser, using her leadership skills, to keep the St Mary’s defence in the right positions throughout the competition. Eve Blakey was the star scorer, with 14 tries to her name in 4 games. Lily Hall and Thea Cowie were brilliant in defence and attack. Even though there were a couple of bumps and scrapes along the way, the girls all really enjoyed the day.

St Mary’s finished the competition in 2nd place – a brilliant achievement for a group who had so little experience before the festival.

Try scorers included:

Eve Blakey

Grace Taylor

Thea Cowie

Kate Lievesley

Ellen Parker

players:

Grace Taylor (capt), Eve Blakey, Megan Lucas, Ellen Parker, Mariyah Ahmed, Hannah Crowdy, Thea Cowie, Kate Lievesley, Rebecca Leitch, Lily Young, Chloe Swinbanks.

Girls rugby training is every Monday night, and is led by a specialist women’s coach from the RFU. Everyone is welcome.
