The St Mary’s Y10 and Y11 girls’ badminton team took part in the Sainsbury’s school games competition today at the Tyneside Badminton Centre.

The girls took part in four games against Benfield, Newcastle High, Sacred Heart and Gosforth Academy. The standard of badminton at the competition was very high, but the girls gave it their best throughout the afternoon and performed well in each game.

Laura Dyter and Christianne Salvatierra had very tough days playing in the number 1 and 2   places, consequently coming up against the current county champion and many other regular club players. Both girls showed a fantastic attitude towards their matches, and gave their all, right to the final point in every match they played. Christianne was just short of winning her match on 3 separate occasions, but couldn’t convert her match points to put a point on the board for St Mary’s.

The team represented the school brilliantly and showed great character throughout the tournament. The Badminton the students played, was fantastic to watch.

The Team: Laura Dyter, Malak Abugchem, Elizabeth Watson, Christianne Salvatierra, Hannah Watson.
