St Mary’s Year 7 & 8 Boys team took part in the RFU Emerging Schools Festival today at Druid Park on the 10th of March.
The Year 8 Team played in 7 fixtures against Gosforth Central Middle, Churchill Community College, St Josephs, Amble, Ashington High, and Richard Coates. Game 1 against Gosforth Central Middle was a tough match, and St Mary’s were overwhelmed repeatedly at the breakdown by a well-drilled Gosforth pack. The boys worked hard in their gaps between games and gradually improved their team play throughout the rest of the afternoon, managing to win 3, draw 2 and lose 2. In the final game of the day St Mary’s played a second fixture against Gosforth Central Middle and their improvement was clear to see, competing much better in all aspects of the game and drawing 1-1. Ben Jubb led the team well and organised his defence at all times, whilst still managing to be dominant when carrying the ball. Kevin Palliser-Bosomworth tackled well but was even more impressive with the ball, running in 5 tries on the day and being unstoppable at times.
Player of the Day – Jack Pilling – brilliant all day, using fantastic technique in the tackle and showing good judgement with the ball in hand, creating chances for his teammates and finishing off well when given the opportunity.

The Year 7 Team played 4 fixtures against George Stephenson, Churchill Community College, St Josephs and Richard Coates. The boys performed well in only their 2nd tournament together and managed to run in 6 tries on the day whilst competing well against much more experienced opponents. Despite struggling in game 1 they bounced back over the rest of the afternoon and managed to win their final game against Richard Coates. Billy Cummins was outstanding in defence and attack, being very difficult to stop with the ball and fearless in the tackle. Fred Eltringham was very vocal and lead the defence very well, organising his teammates and making sure the defence was difficult to break down.
Player of the Day – James Hepburn – for his all-round play and brilliant efforts supporting other less experienced rugby players.
All students represented the school brilliantly and gave it their all in each fixture played. Fixtures will be taking place on evenings in the future, with rugby club taking place every Thursday (week A) and Wednesday (Week B) after school.
