The Y9 and 10 Rugby Teams took part in the RFU Emerging Schools Festival at Bullocksteads on Thursday the 4th of February.

Rugby festival 1The Year 9 Team played 5 fixtures against Heaton Manor, Hexham, Bede Academy, King Edward VI and St Thomas More. The boys played some excellent rugby in each fixture, with some good work at the breakdown from Charlie Kain, Isaac Kain and Ben Nelson Taylor giving the backs some excellent attacking opportunities. Josh Scott showed some blistering pace down the wing and managed to convert several chances as he scored 4 tries on the day. The team defended well throughout the day and had many contributions from lesser experienced members of the group. Ethan MacFarland and Gabriel Turowski didn’t show any nerves in their first matches for the school game and both made several tough tackles to stop opposition attacks. The team finished the day with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat in what was a very competitive group.

The Year 10 Team played 5 fixtures on the day against St Thomas More, Duchess Community High School, King Edward VI and Hexham. The boys really gave it their best, but their lack of training and rugby experience was clear from the first match. Several members of the group gave outstanding individual efforts, with Jack Shanahan and Will Hewitt playing strongly both in attack and defence. The star of the day however, was clearly Mohammed Aada. He regularly beat the initial line of defence and often required several of the opposition team to bring him down. His pace and commitment each time he had the ball drove the team forward and was a real pleasure to see.
