St Mary’s hosted St Cuthbert’s in the City Cup Quarter Final in an early morning Saturday kick off. The game started well with both sides passing the ball around nicely on the wet pitch. Kevin Palliser Bosomworth made 2 fine stops early on, showing good bravery to come out and smother the attackers. Jack Pilling went on a mazy run in the opposition penalty area and, despite being clipped, managed to stay on his feet and put the ball right across the middle of the goal. Unfortunately no St Mary’s attackers could get on the end of the cross and the chance was gone. St Cuthbert’s scored after some excellent link up play from their front two, but at 1-0 at half time St Mary’s were still right in the game. St Mary’s almost had a dream start to the second half when Ben Jubb went on an outstanding run from just inside the opposition half. Using excellent strength and skill he managed to beat 4 St Cuthbert’s defenders and his shot beat the keeper, only to come to a sudden halt inches from the goal line when it became stuck in a patch of mud. St Cuthbert’s rubbed salt in the wounds shortly after with a poachers finish from the striker despite Kevin Palliser Bosomworth making an excellent initial save. St Mary’s kept working hard but began to tire towards the end of the match due to a shortage of substitutes. St Cuthbert’s took full advantage and scored 3 quick fire goals in the last 5 minutes to leave the score 5-0, a scoreline which definitely didn’t reflect the closeness of the game.
It was an excellent effort from all of the boys who took part and was easily their best performance of the season so far. Jack Pilling and Kevin Palliser Bosomworth put in fantastic performances, but the man of the match was Ben Jubb for his excellent all-round game in central midfield, breaking up countless opposition attacks and contributing well when going forwards.
