The Y8 Football team played against Benfield on Tuesday night. The game was played in very windy conditions, with the wind favouring Benfield strongly in the first half. An early Benfield goal was quickly equalised by Jamie Mundy, thanks to a fantastic through ball from Nathan Challoner. St Mary’s took the lead thanks to another Jamie Mundy goal, this time a header from another Nathan Challoner assist. The wind caused St Mary’s major problems from corners however, and 3 converted corners quickly made the score 5-2 to Benfield. Jamie though he had scored his first hat-trick just before half-time, but he had his fine finish ruled out for offside. Benfield stole another goal just before halftime with a long range strike, making it 6-2.
St Mary’s still believed that they were in with a chance, with John Carr leading the way with outstanding attitude and leadership throughout the first half. They quickly got their reward in the second half with two fast goals from Nathan Challoner. Their hopes of a comeback were thwarted however, when the referee was forced to bring the match to an early finish due to a fixture clash. Despite playing 30 minutes into the wind and just 10 minutes with the wind St Mary’s were proud of their efforts, and were confident of securing at least a draw if they had had the full 70 minutes.
There were several fine performances on the night, with Jack Pilling and Jake Barlow keeping the ball moving well in midfield, while Nathan Challoner and Jamie Mundy showed some fine link up play up front.
Man of the Match – Jamie Mundy for his 2 goals and all round play.
