Reading Champions Challenge

Congratulations to Alice Haighton (Year 9), Jennifer Whittaker (Year 9), Grace Young (Year 8) and Sarah Humphrey (Year 8) who competed in the national final of the Reading Champions Challenge at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London. As mentioned previously, the students won their regional heat in March to secure a place representing the North-east in the final.

They competed against twenty-two regional champions from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the St Mary’s team did incredibly well to finish in sixth position.  This is a wonderful achievement, particularly given that over 500 teams took part in the qualifying heats.  Huge congratulations to the students!

Our theme in school this week is Promise. It is based on the scripture passage in the Gospel of  Mark which says,  “This is my body, this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. ” (14:12-16)

This passage describes Jesus instructing his disciples to prepare for the Passover meal, which would become known as the Last Supper. 
The primary message of the passage lies in Jesus’ preparation for the upcoming events, specifically his crucifixion, which would take place shortly after the Last Supper. Jesus is aware of his impending death and is putting into action God’s plan for salvation.
Our Thoughts and Prayers this week explore God’s promises and what they mean for us.

Year 9 Football

Year 9 boys Football team played their City Cup Final against Walbottle Academy at Newcastle Blue Star FC and secured a fantastic 2-0 win.  The students played incredibly well to withstand constant pressure from the Walbottle Academy side before Ewan Donnelly scored a headed goal from a corner just before half-time. Thomas Crosby added a second late in the second half to secure the 2-0 win.  The students in this squad were Ethan Boyle, Ewan Donnelly, Sonny Kesson, Thomas Crosby, Dylan Tonks, Riley Peacock, Ewan Aditjandra, Rory Morgan, Logan Griffiths, Kieran Maxwell, Harlan Croft, Scott Thompson, Daniel Knighting-Wykes, Oliver Taylor, Harry Maynard and Rio Kanyingu.

Tyne and Wear School’s Basketball Finals

Our U14 boys Basketball team qualified for the Tyne and Wear School’s Basketball Finals, after finishing second in their basketball league this year. The event took place at Newcastle Eagles Community Centre and our students won the event to become Tyne and Wear School Champions! A fantastic achievement and the PE team have shared that they played incredible basketball and showed great resilience to overcome two early defeats in the group stage of the event.  The students in this squad were Ewan Aditjandra, Thomas Crosby, Jacob Vushemasimba, Noah Vushemasimba, Daniel Knighting-Wykes, Oliver Taylor, Jack Stewart, Maximillian Sroda, Sonny Kesson and Jesse Ladd.

Ascension Thursday 18th May

On Thursday 18th May, the church celebrates the ascension of Jesus. This event is 40 days after the resurrection of Jesus. The events of Jesus’ ascension shows that Jesus returns to Heaven to be with the Father.

We have shared the readings at today’s Mass to celebrate this holy day, should you wish to read them.

Thoughts and Prayers 22nd – 26th May

Our theme for this week is Energy and comes from John 20:19-23. In this passage, St. John recalls an event after Jesus’ resurrection where he appeared to his disciples, who were gathered together in fear. Jesus greeted them with the words, “Peace be with you!” He showed them his hands and side, proving his identity, and the disciples rejoiced. Jesus then breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The Holy Spirit is often associated with energy and power in Christian beliefs, as it is seen as the active presence of God, providing spiritual strength and guidance.

The Thoughts and Prayers provide a reflection for each morning on this theme.

Our theme in school this week is Be Bold. It comes from Mark 16:15-20 and is commonly known as the Great Commission. It occurs near the end of the Gospel of Mark and portrays Jesus’ final instructions to His disciples, after his crucifixion, before ascending to heaven. We are asked to “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.”
Jesus gives His disciples a vital command: to go out and share the Good News with everyone.
