The Year 10 football team travelled to Walker on Wednesday for their 2nd league fixture of the year. After making a winning start to the season against Benfield confidence was high.
The game started well with chances at both ends with Nathan Challinor going close after excellent work down the right hand side from Jamie Mundy. Walker were more comfortable on the ball and used the large pitch well, spreading the play quickly to create space. Despite this, St Mary’s looked strong at the back, with Ethan Kortenbach and John Carr strong in the centre of defence and Toby Caisley impressing in his first start at right back. Just before halftime one long ball out from the Walker defence cleared the St Mary’s back 4 leaving the striker 1v1 vs Kevin Palliser-Bosomworth in goal. He made no mistake, calmly lobbing the ball into the empty net after just beating Kevin to the ball. At 1-0 at half-time St Mary’s were still in the game and simply needed to take their chances. Things did not start well in the second half with a long range effort well saved by Kevin but rebounding straight to the attacker who tapped in the easy follow up. St Mary’s responded brilliantly and started to dominate the game, with Caleb Lowery excellent in midfield. A smart ball from Jack Pilling released Nathan Challinor and he drove the ball hard and high in the net to make the score 2-1. Another quickfire break from St Mary’s gave Caleb Lowery a tough chance from a tight angle, but he expertly bent the ball into the far corner to level the scores. Jamie Mundy was performing well in an unfamiliar role on the right wing and he supplied an excellent ball in to the box which was just put wide by Caleb. Jamie then had a chance of his own after more good work from the St Mary’s midfield won the ball back from a Walker goal kick. Sprinting through Jamie calmly finished in the bottom corner to give St Mary’s the lead 3-2 with 10 minutes to go. Walker came back into the game and, despite some excellent resistance from the St Mary’s defence, managed to sneak home an equaliser with 2 minutes to go. With chances at both ends in the final minutes both teams could have won the game, but at the final whistle the game ended 3-3.
A fair result for both sides and another excellent performance from St Mary’s, building nicely from last week’s win and staying undefeated for the year.
MOM – Caleb Lowery – Excellent in midfield, stole the ball on countless occasions and was excellent in possession. Also scored a fine goal to level the scores.
